If your child is thinking of doing this, well done! This is a really fun way to have students study Japanese at home. This is how it works:

 

This is the YEARS 1-3 Page (By all means if your child is in PREP, they can do this too but I didn't want to make it so formal for PREPS)

-There are 47 Areas or Levels to LEARN/PASS

-Each area represents a prefecture in Japan.

-Each time a child MASTERS an area, they get a section coloured in on their RACE TO BLACK LEVEL Passport

-They only get a PASSPORT after they MASTER (100%) the first area.

-For students in 1-3, it is best if you fill out the RACE TO BLACK LEVEL: "I'M READY" note to assure me that your child is ready to sit a very informal, 1 on 1 quiz with me,  in class time. I will put their score on the note so that you can see what they received.

-How to Get Ready:  FOR READING:  Once you've gone through the flashcards for each AREA 1 below and you are sure your child can read the JAPANESE Characters, fill out the RACE TO BLACK LEVEL: "I'M READY" note and get your child to bring it to school with them. They can give it to their teacher or directly to me.

-Then, I will sit down with your child in class (as soon as is practicably possible) and do an informal quiz. If they MASTER (100%) the Area, they will receive a coloured portion of their map to chart their progress on their PASSPORT. If they don't MASTER  the area, they can do it again the following week.

-I can also assure you that I do not make the quizzing environment pressure-laden and it is only meant for fun

-Once a child has MASTERED  each area, I actually record it in my RUNNING-RECORDS  to demonstrate that your child can do each particular area. 

-FOR LISTENING: I say the Japanese word and your child has to give me the ENGLISH translation

-FOR SPEAKING: I say th English word and your child has to give me the JAPANESE translation.

-As the kids go along, they also get little cardboard achievement badges that they can stick on their PASSPORT
